All 3 of the bikes you first posted (one is flagged) could be a $20-$50 purchase at a garage sale, and IMO aren't worth much more.

IMHO you would be best served budgeting some of your $200 to buy food and beer for a knowledgeable local who can make sure you're buying the right size frame and are not buying a problem. Hey NYCriding, good luck with the search! You are definitely living in an area with a lot of available product, but like Thrifty Bill said, to find a nice bike in ready-to-ride shape under $200 in NYC won't be easy. I do the work myself, so it makes it financially OK. I find bikes for less than that amount all of the time, but they always need work (often a lot of work). So I am pretty comfortable with my pricing. Well, my prices are based on experience, buying and selling hundreds of bikes. I get a kick out of buyers that question my prices (how did you come up with that price, ie, they want something great for next to nothing). Sellers in the third group tend to be VERY knowledgeable on value, and are going to ask strong prices for their bikes. They find deals on bikes, refurbish them, and resell them. The third group are people that love working on bikes.

They will find bikes from the first group, do little or nothing to them, maybe air in the tires and bar tape, often present them as if they are ready to ride (they are not) and jack the price up to full retail. The second group are professional sellers, so called DKOs (dirt knocker offers). Those bikes can be a deal, but they ALWAYS need work. The first is a person that has had a bike laying around, unused for many years, if not decades. There are three types of sellers out there. So to find such a bike in NYC is going to be a lot of work. Here in Hooterville, a bike that meets that description runs about $200. I love vintage bikes, but you could easily end up with a bike that needs work, and the work could cost you another $200.ĭecent bike + well conditioned + $200 budget + NYC = Is not happening. Right now, you are not that person, and run the risk of getting a bad deal, particularly in a hot market and with a limited budget. In any financial transaction, the person with the most knowledge wins. Trying to get a decent bike in the next week.Head over to Randy's site "my ten speeds". I've been looking around this forum, as well as keeping tabs on craighslist for sales.
